Winterization Program Above Ground

Water Care Products Needed:

Baquacil
Baqua Shock
Algaecide
Filter Cleaner
Surface Cleaner
Pump Protector
top up dose to 50 ppm
1 gallon per 10,000 gallons
Start up dose
End of season sand cleaning
Water line cleaner
½ can into pump housing area
  1. Have water tested and chemically balanced. (If you do not have a main drain, add water care products before lowering water.) Allow to circulate.
  2. Clean exposed pool surfaces and water line with Surface Cleaner.
  3. Brush and vacuum pool - remove ladders and accessories
  4. Clean skimmer and pump lint basket.
  5. Clean filter with filter cleaner the night before closing (or several days before closing). This will prevent the sand from hardening while the system sits idle during the winter. Follow instructions on the container. If you are changing your sand in the spring, you do not need to clean the sand.
    1. If you have a Main Drain:
      1. Prevent losing pump prime by closing skimmer valve and just draw from main drain. Install Gizzmo. Continue lowering water level through the bottom drain until water reaches 2" to 4" below the skimmer.
      2. Add Baqua Shock.
      3. Add Algaecide.
      4. Add Baquacil to acquire a 50 ppm level.
      5. Allow to circulate at least 12 hours.
      6. Cover Pool.
    2. If you do not have a main drain:
      1. Add Baqua Shock, Algaecide and Baquacil and allow to circulate for at least 12 hours. Drain by hooking up vacuum system and putting filter to waste. Drain water down below skimmer - 2" to 4". Plug the skimmer with the Gizzmo (if skimmer is threaded at bottom) or plug with a winter plug and put a 1/2 plastic jug filled with water to act as a freeze protectant. Plug return. Remove hoses - if they are flex hose. If PVC, close valve and wrap pipes. Cover pool.
  6. Shut down filter - remove cap/plug from bottom to allow water to drain out. Remove pressure gauge and store. Multiport - Prop handle up between two of the notches (if you have winterization on multiport - use that).
  7. Pump - remove plug - spray ½ can of Pump Protector into housing area.
  8. If you have an automatic cleaner, store according to mfg. Directions.
  9. Periodically, as needed, drain excess water from cover. Leave a ½ inch to an inch of water on the cover to anchor it down.
